Historical context
''LAS CRUCES -- New Mexico State University will close its airport effective Sept. 30, University Pres. Gerald W. Thomas announced today. The decision to close the airport, which was approved by the Board of Regents, was based on several factors, however, one of the primary ones was economics. ''We do not feel that we can justify the expenditures to continue operations of the airport Dr. Thomas stated. This would require extensive investments to allow extending and resurfacing the runway, repairing the taxiways and burying power lines. It just is not feasible.'' Thomas also said that the university has had difficulty in finding a contractor to run the airstrip and that for the last month there have not been any interested firms. Other factors leading to the enclosing of the airport, which was constructed before World War II, were safety and nuisance considerations.'' Cited from news releases issued on September 8 1971, NMSU will close its airport on September 30, http://contentdm.nmsu.
