Historical context
''In the summer of 1940 the School of Engineering allowed the National Defense Program to use its facilities for students to pursue vocational studies in airplane construction, aircraft motors, manufacturing and welding. The program was expanded in the fall semester to a two-year program and was known as the Smith Hughes program. The students learned sheet metal work, pattern making, machine shop, and welding among other skills. In the second year the student could choose to learn more of the machinist trade or they could enter the aviation field.''
