Historical context - Charles de Bremond (1863-1919) was from Switzerland of French ancestry and settled in Roswell, New Mexico around 1891. He was well-known in the agricultural industry as a sheep rancher and farmer. Mr. de Bremond was the commander of Roswell’s Battery A from 1910-1920 and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. Battery A fought on the Mexican border during the Mexican Revolution in 1916 and also fought in World War I in France in 1917 and 1918. Battery A was commended personally by Gen. John ''Black Jack'' Pershing for their fighting during World War I. Mr. de Bremond was exposed to poisonous gas while fighting in the Battle of Marne in 1918 and he died in 1919 in Roswell from the exposure. He was awarded posthumously the Distinguished Service Medal. The photos, and photo albums, in this collection focus on Mr. de Bremond’s sheep ranching and his military service.
